EVA / layered-silicate nanohybrids based on organically modified layered silicates and EVA were prepared via melt-blending and solution-blending methods to improve the mechanical property. First, the hydrophobic organo-layered silicates were synthesized by intercalation of stearylammonium (SA) and dimethyldistearylammonium (DMDSA) cations into the layered silicate such as kunipia-F, sodium fluorine mica, and laponite via ion-exchange reaction. The basal spacings of organo-layered silicates were ~ 2.1 nm for SA and ~ 3.5 nm for DMDSA. The degree of dispersion of layered silicates in nanohybrids between EVA and layered silicates and intercalation spacings as determined by X-ray diffraction is changed depending on the type of organic molecules in layered silicates and the type of layered silicates used. Thermal stability and mechanical properties of EVA / layered-silicate nanohybrids has also been systematically investigated.
