Electronic effect study of a salen ligand for metal complexation

There are many kinds of metals to participate in the hormonal regulation of human body. So it is very important to detect the metals selectively in real time using a fluorescent probe. Nowadays it is attractive to detect the metals by introducing a visible active compound to the metal binding ligand, which can complex with the metals. As a result, changes of the electronic density environment of a UV-vis active ligand before and after complexation with metals can be monitored as a color change sensor. Herein, we report the electronic effect of a salen ligand upon binding to metals. As EDG or EWG was applied to the ligand, we could observe the changes of a metal selectivity by introducing methyl group as a EDG or nitro group as a EWG to an azo-based salen using fluorescence spectrometer.
