Porphyrin Based Dye-sensitized Solar Cell

For development of dye-sensitized solar cell, porpyrin dyes were synthesized. The β-position of porphyrin was formylated using Vilsmeier reagent and the resulting aldehyde was converted to ylide which was coupled to thiophene via Wittig reaction. Finally, cyanoacetic acid was introduced as an anchor group to TiO2. Five meso-substituted zinc metalloporphyrins were successfully synthesized, two of which were subjected to further analysis on their electronic and photovoltaic properties. V-129 and V-135 dyes showed broad spectrum range absorption in the UV-Visile region up to 650nm. The cells sensitized by V-129 and V-135 gave an overall conversion efficiency of 3.17% and 4.00%.
