Simultaneous determination of plasticizers migrated from poly(vinyl chloride) gasket seals and food wraps into designated food simulants using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Determination of 7 kinds of plasticizers levels in leaching solutions of poly(vinyl chloride) gasket seals has been carried out using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry; dibutyl phthalate, butyl benzyl phthalate, bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, di-n-octyl phthalate, diisononyl phthalate and diisodecyl phthalate and Bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate. The limits of detections for these plasticizers were in the range of 3 ~ 10 ppb and calibration curves were linear from 0.03 to 5ppm (>0.995). Migration levels in 53 poly(vinylchloride)(PVC) gasket seals and 49 food wraps were determined after dipping samples for 30 min, 60℃ letting migrate plasticizers into designated food simulants, water, 20% ethanol, 4% acetic acid and n-heptane. All of the samples detected plasticizers were migrated in heptane. DBP was detected in 11 samples at the levels of 0.10-0.17 ppm, DEHP was detected in 4 samples at the levels of 0.10-0.12 ppm, DEHA was detected in 2 samples at the levels of 0.17-0.45 ppm and DINP was detected in 9 samples at the levels of 0.06-0.17 ppm among the 53 samples of gaskets. Also, DBP was detected in 34 samples at the levels of 0.10-0.24 ppm, DEHP was detected in 15 samples at the levels of 0.06-0.87 ppm and DEHA was detected in 9 samples at the levels of 0.02-1.32 ppm in food wraps. By examining the detected levels of plasticizers it would be difficult to judge that plasticizers were added in manufacture by intent.
