Metal-catalyzed coordination polymerization, leading materials with relatively high composition of functional monomers is an area of great current interest in chemistry. Functionalized norbornenes show such superior properties as excellent transparency, high glass transition temperature, good solvent resistance, and high thermal stability. Wide range of desirable properties are expected to be further enhanced by the incorporation of appropriately functionalized norbornene derivatives. Many nickel and palladium compounds have been shown to catalyze the addition polymerization of norbornenes. However, The inherent difficulty in the polymerization of functionalized monomers stems from the poisoning of the catalytically active center with the functionality. Thus, we have developed a new system where metal-catalyzed addition polymerization of functionalized norbornenes occurs in the mixed solvents. New catalysts with high resistance to water and high solubility in organic solvents are the key for this successful system.
