Silica nanoparticle has great advantages to incorporate various materials including fluorescent dyes and to modify the surface by easy and simple process. As the well-known RITC(rhodamine B isothiocyanate)-APS or FITC(fluorescein isothiocyanate)-APS coupling reaction has to use an excess amount of APS, (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane, however, it usually causes poor solubility and irregular shape of silica nanoparticles. The fluorescent dyes to be incorporated into silica nanoparticles, were derivatized through the allylation and hydrosilylation, and were characterized by 1H-, 13C-NMR and Mass spectrometry. Controlling several factors related to the size of silica nanoparticles, silica nanoparticles were synthesized by Stöber method in the range from 30 to 300 nm. Their size and shape were characterized by FE-SEM and TEM, and the surface was modified with various molecules having different charges and structures. Their size and shape were not changed even after the heat was treated to as-prepared fluorescent silica nanoparticles and consecutive surface modification was carried out without carrying any purification steps.
