We have synthesized p-triethylene glycol substituted phenylene vinylene derivatives containing two-CN groups. Compound 1 is different from conventional fluorescence materials in the sense that it is more fluorescent in solid state than in solution. The enhanced emission is attributed to the synergistic effect of the intramolecular planarization and J-type aggregation in solid states. 1 was designed to be amphiphilic so that it can aggregate in a selective solvent forming a self-assembled microstructure. Particles of 1 were prepared in THF and water mixture. We obtained UV absorption and PL emission spectra of the particles of 1. We measured the average particle sizes using a particle size analyzer and obtained particle images from fluorescence microscopy.
