Fibronectin (Fn) is a high molecular and highly flexible glycoprotein that is a major component of extracellular matrix. It is known to be responsible for the cell-to-cell adhesion, cell-to-substrate adhesion, wound healing, and etc. Previously we found that highly stretched fibrils can form, when soluble Fn molecules interact with highly charged surfaces, which are initiating a unfolding and binding process. Hence, self-associated Fn became a fibrilar network on those surfaces. In order to control the fibril shape and structure, we prepared patterned surfaces with variously charged polyelectrolytes by a micro-contact printing. We monitored that the selective adhesion, self-binding, and fibril formation process, on the charged surfaces by imaging ellipsometry techniques, and atomic force microscopy.
