Preparation of Porous Thin Films of Aliphatic Copolyimides

Polyimides have attracted much attention as insulating materials in the microelectronics industry because of their high thermal stability and excellent mechanical properties. In this work, aliphatic polyimides were prepared based on rel- [1S,5R,6R]-3-oxabicyclo[3,2,1]octane-2,4-dione-6-spiro-3'-(tetrahydrofuran-2',5'-dione) and 1,2,3,4-cyclobutanetetracarboxylic dianhydride. Also triblock copolyimides having thermally labile block were prepared to introduce nanopores into the aliphatic polyimides. A thermally labile polymer, poly(propylene glycol), was modified to obtain PPG having amino end group. PPG was incorporated into aliphatic polyimides, affording triblock copolymers containing varying amounts of PPG block. The thermal properties o the copolymers were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Thermal decomposition of PPG block in the copolymers was carried out at 230C under various pressure conditions to obtain porous polyimide films. The pore characteristics, optical absorption, and dielectric constants of the polyimides were investigated.
