Mercury, one of the most toxic metals in the environment causes the damage of central nervous system, lungs and also other diseases like nausea, diarrhea upon absorbing to human body. “Long- term exposure to high levels of mercury leads to permanent deterioration of the brain, kidneys, and developing fetus.” On oxidation mercury vapors form water soluble Hg2+ ions, converted to methyl mercury by bacteria through its consequent metabolism. Methyl mercury is more toxic as it can easily penetrate living cells and bio-accumulate in higher organism especially in large edible fish. Therefore development of highly selective, sensitive fluorescent chemosensors are demanded to detect mercury ions as well as methyl mercury ions in living cells in presence of other metal ions. Here we will present a novel fluorescent chemosensor that can be used not only to detect mercury ions as well as methyl mercury ions in aqueous solution. Unlike other reversible mercury sensor, this system reacts irreversible with these ions to generate a highly fluorescent substance. We have also performed in vivo experiments using our sensor.
