We recently reported a new, direct method to synthesize polymer nanocapsules. Without using template or preorganized structure, and without need of core removal, this method directly produces polymer nanocapsules with a highly stable structure and relatively narrow size distribution. This method appears to be applicable to any monomers with a flat core and multiple polymerizable groups at the periphery. This method has been extended to synthesize nanocapsules made of various flat cored molecules, and stimuli-responsive nanocapsules. We have also been interested in metal-organic nanocages self-assembled from metal ions and organic building blocks. As a part of applications of such nanocages, we recently reported the first synthetic ion channel based on metal-organic polyhedra (MOP). The synthetic ion channel formed with MOP-18 transports proton and alkali metal ions across lipid membranes. The MOP-18 channel prefers cations over anions and the cation selectivity in the order of Li+ >> Na+ > K+ > Rb+ > Cs+. The novel ion channel system with easy synthesis, rigid structure, and tunability of the size and chemical environment of pores may find useful applications in many areas including sensor and catalysis. The details of these studies will be presented.
