Erbium-doped inorganic materials have been used in optical amplifier at 1,540 nm due to the4I13/2->4I15/2 transition of Er3+ ion. In recent, lots of studies on Er-doped nanoscale materials have carried out for applications such as EDWA. However, the nanoscale particles have a very small size and large surface area, so that they can be easily adsorbed by O-H groups. Especially, the adsorption of O-H groups to Er3+ ions being on the surfaces of nanoparticles leads to quenching of the 1,540 nm-emission. To overcome the drawback, the Er-doped LaPO4/LaPO4 nanoparticles of the core/shell type have synthesized in a solution system using the mixture solvent. The synthesized particles have been characterized by using XRD, TEM, and NIR-PL. The emission intensity of the core/shell nanoparticles at 1,540 nm was largely increased compared with LaPO4:Er nanoparticles.
