Transition metal complexes including Ir metal, which had played a key role in the classical photocatalytic studies on water splitting, have recently been studied actively. Among them, Ir-based photocatalytic system has received many attention because of its great diversity of tunable electronic properties resulting from ligand substitution. In an effort to improve its efficiency, we have synthesized three Ir-cored dendrimers from the first to the third generation consisting of [Ir(C^N)2(N^N)]+[PF6]- and phenyl carbazole dendrons on the basis of the efficient energy transfer in dendritic host-guest system proved in OLED. Indeed, the photophysical study revealed the efficient energy transfer from the dendritic carbazole unit to the core sensitizer. Then each compound was used as a photocatalyst for hydrogen generation in a standard photo-induced hydrogen production system.
