In the last few years, only few articles have been devoted to the study on the influence of a central naphthylene unit with different substitution position into the phase behavior of the banana-shaped molecules. Recently, the genuine switching properties for the bent-shaped molecules with an asymmetric 1,6-naphthylene central core have been reported: with a Schiff’s base unit, racemic SmCSPA phase at zero-field state switches to SmCAPF phase by applying electric field, whereas without a Schiff’s base unit, chiral SmCAPA phase to SmCSPF phase. Here we describe that a new bent-shaped molecule with the acute-angled configuration could form the SmAP phase which reveals a ferroelectric-like switching. In this study, this was achieved by the synthesis of a bent-shaped molecule consisting of 2,3-naphthalene central core, phenyl benzoate side arm, all-ester linkage and dodecyloxy end group and its mesomorphic and electrooptical properties were investigated by the various methods.
