The genus Thymus includes ornamental, usually aromatic, herbs that belong to the Lamiaceae family. Two species (Thymus quinquecostatus var. japonica and Thymus quinquecostatus Celak) are found in Korea, and the aerial parts of these plants have been used as ingredients in folk remedies for cough and diaphoresis, and as carminatives, antispasmodics, and parasiticides. Recent reports identified and proved that T. quinquecostatus has several medicinal functions, including an anti-tumor effect. In addition, the essential oil exhibited antimicrobial activity against several fungi and antibiotic-resistance bacteria. However, the anti-inflammatory effect of T. quinquecostatus has not been described. Based on the known chemical composition and antibacterial effects of T. quinquecostatus essential oil, we investigated its possible effectiveness for acne treatment and promotion of skin health. In conclusion, we demonstrated that T. quinquecostatus essential oil has good antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-elastase and anti-inflammatory effects against acne-inducing bacteria and induces low cytotoxicity in human cell lines. Therefore, according to these results, we suggest that T. quinquecostatus essential oil may be employed as an effective therapeutic agent to ameliorate acne disease and promote skin health.
