Improved Dispersion Stability of Silver Nanoparticles via Different Chain Length Alkylcarboxylate Mixtures

It has been reported that the conformational freedoms of surfactant layers play an important role in the dispersion stability of nanoparticles. The dispersion stability of the nanoparticles with long alkyl chain monodenate surfactants (n-alkylcarboxylate, n-alkyanethiol etc.) are generally poor, because of their tendency to pack densely and hence losing the conformational entropy of the surfactant layer. Here in, we represent a simple method of improving the dispersion stability of Ag nanoparticles by simply mixing alkylcarboxylates with different chain lengths. The dispersion stabilities of 6.0 nm sized Ag nanoparticles capped by carboxylate with various chain lengths and their mixtures were compared and determined quantitatively with UV-vis spectroscopy. From the experiment, it was demonstrated that a mixed surfactant can improve the dispersion stability of a nanoparticle solution. Among the mixed surfactant, the surfactant pairs close to a 1:1 molar ratio showed high stability. The enhancement in dispersion stability in the mixed surfactant might be related to the surface roughness of the surfactant layer.
