Selective catalytic reduction of NOx with propylene over Ag/Al2O3 and Ag/Mg/Al2O3 by in situ DRIFTS

The catalysts Ag/Al2O3and Ag/Mg/Al2O3were prepared by conventional impregnation method and the influence of Mg over Ag/Al2O3 catalyst for reduction of NOx by in-situ DRIFT was studied. The catalysts also characterized by XRD and XPS. The high surface availability of Ag0 and Ag+ in 3%Ag/5%Mg/Al2O3 catalyst was observed from XPS which shows high activity for the NO conversion at relatively lower temperatures. The DRIFT spectra were recorded during NO + C3H6 + O2 reaction in the steady state conditions at various temperatures from 250 to 450 ºC over 3%Ag/Al2O3 and 3%Ag/5%Mg/Al2O3 catalysts. From the DRIFTS studies the formation of enolic species observed from low temperatures over 3%Ag/5%Mg/Al2O3 catalyst was found. These formed enolic species effectively reacts with NO + O2 to convert into isocyanate species. The isocyanate species are the important intermediate species which further converts selectively into N2 and CO2.
