Synthesis and Spectroscopic Characterization of Molybden-Incorporated Mo-AlMCM-41 Mesoporous Material

A solid-state reaction of MoO3 with AlMCM-41 followed by calcination generated paramagnetic Mo(V) species. The dehydration resulted in weak Mo(V) species, and subsequent activation resulted in the formation of Mo(V) species such as Mo(V)5c and Mo(V)6c that are characterized by ESR. The local structure of active sites characterized by means of XRD, UV-vis, 27Al MAS NMR and EDX measurements. Mo-AlMCM-41 was found to possess two different types of Mo-oxide species. The data of ESR and UV-vis, and 27Al MAS show the oxomolybden species, to be (MoO2)+ or (MoO3)3+. The (MoO)3+ species seems to be more probable. Since H-AlMCM-41 has a high framework negatve charge, (MoO)3+ with a high positive charge can be easily stabilized. A new interpretation for the NMR signal observed at +15 ppm in the 27Al MAS spectrum of Mo-AlMCM-41 was done. This signal was assigned to an Anderson-type heteropolymolybdate [Al(OH)6Mo6O18]3-, which can be formed during solid-state reaction step of the catalyst preparation, as well as a result of hydration of Al2(MoO4)3 in calcined Mo-AlMCM-41 catalysts.
