Liquid crystal belongs to an important class of optical materials owing to the intrinsic property of order and mobility. The nematic liquid crystals can be doped with photo-active molecules to achieve an ordering required for a photonic application. When doped with an azo-benzene moiety, a polarization grating can be inscribed holographically via photo-isomerization process. The nematic holographic grating structure will be presented in application to the optical angular momentum transfer. On the other hand, when doped with a chiral agent and laser dye, a formation of chiral nematic liquid crystal structure takes place. The chiral nematic liquid crystal structure forms a polarization laser cavity. Two orthogonal modes of in-phase and out-phase polarization standing wave allows for a lasing operation near the bandgap edges of reflection spectra. A one-dimensional spatial tuning of the laser wavelength will be presented.
