The knowledge of structure of intermediates is essential for the understanding of a chemical reaction. Recently time-resolved x-ray diffraction in liquid phase has been shown to track transient structural changes with unprecedented spatial resolution. We have investigated photoreaction of laser excited HgI2 in methanol solution using time-resolved liquid x-ray diffraction. The structural characterizations of photochemical transients during the whole recombination processes are derived from difference x-ray diffraction patterns. In addition, molecular dynamics simulations are performed and compared with experimental data to explore solute structural changes and related solvent dynamics. Time-resolved liquid x-ray diffraction allows one to follow changes of atomic motions in liquids.
