Silver nanoparticles based fluorimetric determination of catechin

A sensitive fluorimetric method for the determination of catechin using silver nanoparticles as emission reagent has been investigated. Preparation of silver nanoparticle was based on aqueous-gaseous phase reaction of silver nitrate solution and ammonia gas. The prepared nanoparticles were stable, water soluble and having extremely narrow emission band. They were used as fluorimetric probe for the determination of catechin, which is based on the quenching effect of catechin on the emission of silver nanoparticles. The principal reason for quenching is due to the formation of complexation between catechin and silver nanoparticles. The quenching mechanism was established by Stern-Volmer law. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the quenched fluorescence intensity was linear with the concentration of catechin in the range of 1×10-8M to 9.0×10-5M (r=-0.9979) with a detection limit of 4.5×10-9M. The proposed method was applied to the determination of catechin in biological samples with satisfactory results.
