Cefixime belongs to an important class of valuable clinical antibiotics, the cephalosporin. They are referred to the B-lactam antibiotics which are among the oldest and most frequently prescribed of naturally occurring antimicrobial agents. Spectrofluorimetry is a simple and highly sensitive method of analysis, used for the determination of various entities such as metal ions and biologically important compounds by using calcein which is a familiar fluorescent reagent, widely used in fluorescence analysis and as an indicator in titration. The cefixime was treated with NaOH to make a complex which was further reacted with calcein to form a strong fluorescent compound which can quench the fluorescence intensity. The interaction of some biomacromolecules which emit fluorescence with some medicinally important compounds (antibiotics) can cause the fluorescence quenching. Under optimum conditions, a linear relationship is obtained between the concentrations of cefixime and the fluorescence quenching. The proposed method was successfully validated with reliable results.
