Rechargeable lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries exhibiting high energy and power density are in great demand as energy sources for a variety of advanced technologies. There is a need for significant advances to be made in the design and engineering of Li-ion battery components to match the energy needs of modern computing and electronic devices. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a safe, compact, lightweight, higher energy density and longer lasting rechargeable batteries. Graphite is currently used as the preferred commercial negative electrode materials of choice in Li-ion batteries, which provides a theoretical capacity of 372 mAh g-1. However, it is necessary to develop new electrode materials for the improved energy sources. In the present study, a review on the electrochemical and structural properties of a variety of carbon materials will be discussed. Furthermore, the recent study on the novel composite materials for a negative electrode materials will be presented.
