Validation of analytical methods for diamines migrated from plastic utensils

To control nylon equipments and packages intended to come into contact with food, analytical methods for the determination of ethylenediamine (EDA) and hexamethylenediamine (HMDA), monomers used in the manufacture of certain nylons, which are migrated from plastic utensils were established. High performance liquid chromatography fluorescence detection (HPLC/FLD) and gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC/FID) were showed to be both suitable methods for detecting of EDA and HMDA below the specific migration limits (SML), respectively 12 mg/kg and 2.4 mg/kg in food simulant. The levels of EDA or HMDA in food simulants were determined by derivatization of with ethyl chloroformate as derivatization agent for analysis by GC/FID or dansyl chloride for analysis by HPLC/FLD.
