Spatiotemporal pattern formation and the mechanistic origin of formic acid (HCOOH) oxidation on a bismuth (Bi) modified platinum (Pt) electrode is the main subject of this work. Examples are standing waves, travelling pulse, controlled pulse reversal and saltatory conduction. The experimental results are in agreement with simulations of the reaction-migration system. Of late, we dedicated great effort to the idea of exploiting the nonlinear regime of electrocatalytic reactions for efficiency enhancement of electrochemical power generation, e.g. in low-temperature fuel cells. In particular, underpotential deposition of Bi onto electrochemically deposited Pt surface was conducted in an attempt to improve catalyst utilization and to secure an electronic percolation network toward HCOOH fuel cell application by using carbon paper as catalyst support. Electrodeposited PtBiupd anode catalyst resulted in enhanced power performance and in contrast to Pd catalyst, it is stable enough in terms of long-term operation even with ultra-low Pt loading of 0.5mg/cm2
