TEM Study of Channel Structure in Mesoporous MFI Zeolite using Pt Imaging Technique

Zeolites are microporous crystalline aluminosilicate which is widely used in catalysis as well as in the separation and purification fields. The major drawback of zeolites is a diffusion limitation of bulky molecules into the reaction sites of zeolite channels, because of its microporous structure. To solve this problem, there have been numerous attempts to synthesize mesostructured materials having crystalline wall structure. Recently, Ryoo and his colleagues developed a direct synthesis route to MFI zeolite with secondary mesopores. The mesopore structure of mesoporous(MP) MFI zeolite was very difficult to determine by XRD patterns and TEM images due to the disordered structure of mesopores channels. To study the mesoporous channel structure of MP MFI zeolite, Pt nanowires were synthesized in the mesoporous channels, and then, TEM images were taken. The TEM images of Pt nanowires would reflect the 3-dimentional mesoporous channel structure of MP MFI zeolite. The structure of synthesized Pt nanowires indicates that the mesoporous channels are interconnected.
