Electrochemical behaviors of the electrode of skin-core carbon nano-fibers from electrospinning of polyacrylronitrile(PAN)/pitch blend solutions

Carbon nano-fibers (CNFs) with a uni- structure or a skin-core structure were prepared from electrospinning of the polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/pitch blend solutions and followed by carbonization and activations to apply to the electrical double layer capacitor (EDLC). The carbon nano-fiber with uni-structure was steam activated and resulted specific surface area of 1877m2/g. The PAN/pitch-7/3-based carbon nano-fiber with skin-core structure was activated by steam or CO2 and the specific surface areas were 907m2/g and 883m2/g respectively. The specific capacitance from the uni-structured electrode was 143F/g in the 6M of KOH aqueous solution. The values from the skin-core structured electrode was 340F/g from steam and 300F/g from CO2 activation. Those capacitance values were 2.4 and 2.1 times higher than that form the electrode of uni-structure fiber even with 2 times larger specific surface area. Preparations of shallow pores from the skin-core structure would enhance the ion accessibility into the pores in improving energy storage efficiency and rate properties of charge/discharge.
