Organizing soluble molecular components into supramolecular networks or discrete molecules by “self-assembling” cluster building-blocks in aqueous solutions has been received much attention. A new type of mesoscale materials consisted of chalcocyanide hexarhenium clusters, [Re6Se8(CN)6]4-, linked by various divalent metals such as Mn(II), Co(II) and Cu(II) could be prepared with the templates of liquid crystals. The primary importance of this research lies in the use of octahedral building blocks with metallocyanide terminal groups for the preparation of novel mesostructured materials with either three-dimensional bicontinuous cubic Ia3d symmetry or two-dimensional hexagonal p6mm symmetry. Conjugation of an amphiphilic diblock copolymer to rhenium cluster, namely the derivative K4[{Re6S8}(OH)5L] (3) (L is amphiphilic diblock copolymer MPEG550-CH2CONH-GlyPheLeuGlyPheLeu-COO-) was made and their cellular uptake behavior was evaluated in human. These new materials are very important class of materials in the field of mesoporous materials, porous frameworks, and nanoscience which may open probabilities in various applications such as catalysis, sensing, sorption and photodynamic therapy.
