Synthesis of task-specific ionic liquids with special functions according to the requirement of a specific reaction has become an attractive field. The protic functionality of tert-alcohol plays crucial role in nucleophilic displacement reaction to decrease the byproduct alkene significantly. On the basis of successful results of ionic liquid and tert-alcohol, we found synergistic effect of two solvents tert-alcohol and ionic liquid, in one molecule in nucleophilic fluorination. The combined molecule, [mim-tOH][OMs] of tert-alcohol and imidazolium salt not only enhances the reactivity of the metal fluorides but also increases the selectivity of the product, consequently decreasing the formation of byproducts such as alkene, ether, and etc. The polymer-supported ionic liquids (PSILs) catalysts enhance the reactivities of nucleophiles and increase the reaction rates comparatively in unbounded ionic liquids as well as crown ethers. Due to the separation problem, ionic resins which quarternary onium salts are supported on a polymer matrix have been developed. Functionalized ionic liquid [mim-tOH][OMs], simple imidazolium ionic liquid, and simple tetraalkyl ammonium salt are known as good PTCs in nucleophilic displacement reaction. Investigation of the comprehensive study on the catalytic activity of newly designed protic-functionalized ionic liquid, ionic liquid, and triethylamine on the polystyrene in various nucleophilic substitution reaction will be discussed.
