Current Situation and Technical Development of Carbon Fibers in Korea

About forty years age, carbon fibers were heralded as the new wonder materials which are extremely useful reinforcement materials. The first fibers were manufactured by heating strands of rayon until they carbonized. This process proved to be inefficient, as the resulting fibers contained only about 20% carbon and had low strength and stiffness properties. In the early 1960s, a process was developed using polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as a raw material. This had produced a carbon fiber that contained about 55% carbon and had much better properties. The polyacrylonitrile (PAN) conversion process quickly became the primary method for producing carbon fibers. Even though high strength carbon fibers were developed forty years age and used in industrial and military areas, few countries can manufacture them and hold the world market of carbon fibers. Carbon fibers in Korea have been used as reinforcing materials in sports, automobiles, ships, aircrafts, and military machines about twenty years age. However, Korea didn’t have the carbon fiber manufacturing systems yet. Recently, MOEST decided to support the R&D of carbon fibers for the development of core source materials. Some research groups in university, government institutes, and private companies started to R&D projects for Korean-made carbon fibers. In this work, we wish to present current situation and technical development for the technologies of carbon fibers in Korea.
