Transition metal oxide nanoparticles have been extensively studied because of various potential applications in magnetic bio-separation, MRI and etc. Numerous synthetic methods have been developed for high quality metal oxide nanoparticles, each unvaryingly boasting single-crystallinity and size-monodispersity. In particular, the single-crystallinity served as a guide for material quality and consistency in material property. However, the assessment of single-crystallinity has been, thus far, at best qualitative, because it is practically impossible to examine all the nanoparticles on the TEM grid, not to mention all those formed within a batch. Thus it is utterly necessary to develop a simple method for a statistically meaningful, quantitative assessment of nanoparticle single-crystallinity. In this seminar, I will describe a simple, definitive method to provide a visual indication of nanoparticle polycrystallinity.
