Composite materials of conducting polymer and electroactive metal oxides are of recent importance as interesting electrode materials for rechargeable lithium batteries. Composites of layer structured V2O5 and a conducting polymer are expected to exhibit synergystic effect of inorganic redox structure with improved mechanical and conductive properties. In this work, vanadium oxide and polyaniline composites (V2O5/PANi) of various particle sizes were chemically prepared as cathode materials for lithium rechargeable batteries. Powders of V2O5/PANi composite were prepared directly from an acidic solution containing aniline monomer using V2O5 powder as an oxidizing agent and a constituent material. The composition and characteristics of the V2O5/PANi composites can be controlled by the preparation condition such as the polymerization rate, the solution pH, and the temperature. The crystal structure, the composition, and the morphology of the V2O5/PANi composites were characterized by using an X-ray diffractometer (Rigaku, D/max 2700V/VP), a FT-IR spectrophotometer (Nicolet iS10), a thermal gravity analyzer (Netzsch ST4 409PC), and a scanning electron microscope (SEM; JEOL JSM-6380). Particle-shaped V2O5/PANi composites with controlled sizes were prepared. Full characterization of the cathode is under investigation.
