We have conducted a series of experiments designed to elucidate the nature of interaction between transition metal oxide and the adsorbents. As a result, we discovered a novel phenomenon that pure polycyclic hydrocarbon arenes (ArHs) readily form 1:1 and 2:1 CT complexes with dry transition metal oxide surfaces. The so-called Grätzel-type solar cells are composed of transparent conducting oxide, TiO2, Ru-complexes which are chemically adsorbed on TiO2, electrolytes primarily consisting of I2/I3-, and the counter electrode having Pt catalysts. Here, the most important primary step in the cell operation is electron injection from the photoexcited Ru dyes to TiO2. One way to increase the cell efficiency in the dye-sensitized solar cells would be to change the course of electron injection. We will demonstrate a new type of dye-sensitized solar cell which operates by direct electron injection from chemically adsorbed catechol derivatives to TiO2 by charge-transfer excitation of the catechol-to-TiO2 MLCT bands.
