Current activities of nano-bio convergence technology for measurement and control of single cell has been will be summarized. It includes laser spectroscopic technology, mass spectrometry, nanoprobe device, and etc. Laser techniques are used for cell trapping, in-vitro chemical mapping, and cell nano-bio surgery. Mass spectrometric techniques such as FTMS, TOF-SIMS, MALDI are the major tools for single cell and biochip surface analysis. For detection of metabolites from a single cell, fabrication of nano sensing device with high sensitivity is studied. Nano scale scanning probe microscopic methods combined with Raman, SPR and ellipsometry, optical nano fiber aim for biochemical mapping of a single cell with higher sensitivity and selectivity. Spatial resolution in the range of 10 ~ 100 nm is suggested for single cell biochemical mapping. Emphasis will be given on the in-vitro analysis of living cells but in some cases, cell freezing and fracture methodology will be adopted for more detailed biochemical information. Some of preliminary results will be presented and discussed. Developed sub-cellular measurement and control techniques will be used for novel understanding of disease mechanism and development of drug cell assay. Mutually complementary collaborations between different fields such as chemistry, physics, biology, medical science, drug development/delivery, and tissue engineering should be encouraged.
