Performance of Direct Methanol Fuel Cells with Anodes of Various Contents of Pt and Ru

Anodes of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) were made using various contents of Pt and Ru. Pt:Ru atomic ratios used in this work were 5:5, 4:6 and 3:7. 15 atomic % carbon powder was added to the resulting mixtures. Cathodes were prepared by plasma deposition of Pt. Performance of DMFCs was examined at temperatures ranging from 45 to 90 ℃. The result showed that DMFCs with the anodes of the 5:5 atomic ratio performed far better for most conditions, while those with the 4:6 ratio at higher temperatures performed comparably. Introduction of carbon powder to the anodes could facilitate reducing Pt loading, which needs further scrutiny.
