Effect of Methanol Feed Rate in Direct Methanol Fuel Cells

Performance of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) was studied at temperatures ranging from 45 to 90 ℃ in terms of methanol feed rate and concentration. Pt and Ru were used for anodes of 1:1 atomic ratio and Pt for cathodes. Methanol concentrations were 1 and 2 M and their feed rates were 1 and 2 mL/min. The effect of 1 M methanol feed rate appeared to be striking at higher temperatures, while it turned out to be insignificant at lower temperatures. The effect of 2 M methanol feed rate was shown to be less pronounced at the higher temperatures. This implies that performance of the DMFCs are affected by methanol feed rate and concentration. Consequently, efficiency of the DMFCs could be improved by finding the methanol feed rate suitable to its concentration.
