Noble metallic nanostructures of Ag, Au, and Cu exhibit a phenomenon known as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in which the scattering cross sections are dramatically enhanced for molecules adsorbed thereon. Due to the enormously large enhancement factor on the order of up to 1015, one can readily acquire the vibrational spectra from adsorbates on those metal surfaces. In conjunction with SERS, we hope to present our latest observation that SERS-active Ag nanoparticles are photoelectron emitters and can also function as electron-relay catalysts. We will show that patterning of binary monolayers can be accomplished via the Ag nanoparticle-directed photoreaction. In addition, we will illustrate that vibrational spectra of organic molecules assembled on SERS-inactive substrates can be obtained by using Ag nanoparticles that are physically in contact with the adsorbate molecules. Silver nanoparticles tagged with host or guest molecules will also be demonstrated to be usable as effective molecular sensing/recognition mediator via SERS.
