The surface and interaface may play a significant role to induce the preferential orienation of various polymer structural units. Since many properties such as coating, surface reflection, adhesion etc are affected sensitively by the materials at the surface, it is important to understand the behavior of polymer material at the surface. In this work, the FTIR spectroscopy and X-ray scattering methods are extensively used to characterize the orientational status of polymer chain segments and crystalline phase. Information on the three dimensional orientation of various chain segment could be obtained by the quantitative analysis of the polarized FTIR-ATR spectrum. The preferential orientation of the crystalline phase in the confined space could be confirmed with the grazing angle X-ray deffraction method. Using various aromatic polyesters, effect of the following parameters on the orientation will be discussed (1) Surface and interface (2) Thermally induced crystallization (3) Stress-induced crystallization (4) Confined space in thin film and cylinder
