Glucose Biosensor based on Sol-Gel-derived Zinc oxide nanoparticles/Nafion composite films

A novel amperometric glucose biosensor was developed. Nafion-GOx-Nano zinc oxide(ZnO) nanobiocomposite film onto gold electrode has been used for glucose detection. The presence of ZnO nanoparticles increased surface area and enhanced elecetron transfer kinetics. It has been found that the ZnO Sol-gel matrix provided an advantageous microenvironment in term of retaining enzyme(GOx)’s activity to a large extent. Glucose oxidase(GOx) was immobilized within a thin film of 1% nafion-ZnO sol-gel composite film coated on a gold electrode. Nafion-GOx-NanoZnO/Au electrode(Biosensor) have been characterized using cyclic voltammetry(CV) in 0.1M phosphate buffer solution(PBS) containing 5mM Glucose. The morphology of the biosensor has been investigated by Scanning Eletron Microscopy(SEM). The electrochemical performance of the electrode has also been studied by amperometric method at an applied potential of +0.8V versus Ag/AgCl reference electrode. Analytical performance of the glucose biosensor based on the Nafion-Gox-NanoZnO composite is superior to that of the biosensor based on the Nafion/GOx/ZnO film. The detailed results of amperometric method(linearity, sensitivity, detection limit, KM etc) will be discussed.
