Development of an Electrochemical Nitric Oxide Sensor Based on a Micropore Electrode

Due to many important physiological and biological functions of nitric oxide (NO), the demand for the real-time determination of NO in biological conditions has been increasing. In terms of analytical performance such as selectivity, sensitivity, durability, and spatial resolution, an electrochemical NO sensor based on a micropore electrode has some advantages over general Clark-type and/or micro-disk sensors. Therefore, in this presentation we will present the development of a micro-pore-electrode-based electrochemical NO sensor. First, a micro-disk electrode was fabricated by sealing an etched Pt microwire in a glass capillary and then carefully polishing the end. Second, the Pt disk was etched to form a conical pore of a few micrometer dimensions (radius < 3 μm). The micropore electrode surface was electrochemically platinized to improve sensitivity. For the sensor selectivity for gas, the electrode surface was covered with electrochemically polymerized poly-5-amino-1-nathphol or poly-toluidine blue and the pore inner wall was silanized. The sensor working potential was +0.75 V vs. Ag/AgCl reference/counter electrode. The selectivity of the sensor for NO over various interfering species (e.g., nitrite, ascorbic acid, uric acid, etc.) was examined.
