Development of an Electrochemical Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide Dual Microsensor

An oxygen(O2) and carbon dioxide(CO2) clark-type amperometric dual microsensor was fabricated. This sensor can measure the amount of O2 and CO2 gases simultaneously in aqueous solution samples. The prepared sensor consists of a dual microelectrode (working electrode, WE) possessing two separate 76-μm-diameter Pt disks and an Ag/AgCl counter/reference electrode. As a gas selective membrane, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) gas-permeable membrane was used. Working potentials for each sensing Pt disk of the dual microelectrode and internal solution compositions were optimized to differentiate O2 and CO2. Both O22and CO2 are biologically very important gases. Therefore, quantitative measurements of the concentrations of O2 and CO2 in biological conditions are required. Furthermore, simultaneous measurements of O2 and CO2 using the sensor we developed would be able to provide crucial information to understand still unresolved biological processes involving both O2 and CO2. As a simple application, the prepared O2/CO2 dual sensor was employed to measure the concentrations of O2 and CO2 in chicken egg's thin albumin.
