The Pohang Light Source (PLS) project was started in 1988 and its construction was completed in September, 1994. The PLS was designed to provide synchrotron radiation source with continuous wavelengths down to 0.01 nm. Since 2000, the PLS has been running at 2.5 GeV. The PLS has been serving domestic and international users since September, 1995. Currently 28 beamlines are in operation and 3 beamlines are under construction; the construction of the 3 beamlines will be done by the end of this year. Further 9 more beamlines are planned to be constructed within next five years. The users community has rapidly grown in number for last 14 years and, as a result, their research outputs have also steeply increased in number (about 3,000 users visited the PLS facility in 2008) and significantly promoted in quality. This year the PLS has just started the PLS-2 Project (Upgrade Project) with a three year term, which can provide three major improvements, (1) energy increased to 3.0 GeV (from 2.5 GeV), (2) emittance reduced to 5.0 nm.rad (from 18 nm.rad) and (3) insertion beamlines increased to 20 (from 10). Now the PLS is planning to construct an X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL)Facility, so-called the 4th Generation Synchrotron Facility, which can lead the 21 century science, technology and industrial technology in Korea. Overall, details on the current status, the PLS-2 Project and XFEL Facility Project will be given in this presentation.
