A Debate of Magnetic Properties of Metals contrasting iMQCs MR Imaging

Recently, a new method for magnetic resonance imaging contrast enhancement based on the detection of relatively strong signals from intermolecular multiple quantum coherences (iMQCs) both in vitro and in vivo has been reported. These signals are basically depending on the magnetic properties of samples which can be modified by an appropriate contrasting agent. Here we concerned and tested several metal salts as contrast agents affecting the iMQCs signals on the purpose of looking for a good contrasting material fitting to the new method. Also, as an example application, we report the results of various experimental studies performing in vitro phantom and model cell system at 14.1 T μMRI. It showed that the iMQCs microscopic images are readily observable and have unique contrast depending on the sample micro-structure. We compared intermolecular double quantum coherences (iDQCs) images with gradient echo (GE) images for the iron-labeled macrophage cells in agar gel at various spatial resolutions and different slice thickness conditions. These results showed that iDQC images visualized the labeled cells more effectively with high contrast-to-noise ratio than conventional GE images especially at the lower spatial resolution and thicker slice thickness.
