Tailoring Cut of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes with Ultrasonication Process for Conductive Films

Each multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) synthesized by CVD method at 600℃, 700℃, and 800℃ was cut by high powered ultrasonication. The variation of the length distribution of each MWNT sample depending on sonication time was investigated by SEM and TEM. To evaluate degree of defects on the samples after ultrasonication, thermal stability analysis was performed by TGA. We incorporated BET surface analysis to find the relationships between MWNT length distribution and total surface area according to conditions of ultrasonication. MWNT sample synthesized at higher temperature (800℃) shows longer lengths than other samples after ultrasonication at the same condition. We optimized cut process by ultrasonication to produce MWNTs with proper length distribution for application of conductive films.
