We fabricated field effect transistor (FET)-type gas sensors using single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) for the detection of dimethylmethylphosphonate (DMMP), which is a stimulant for nerve gas. SWCNTs were obtained through the catalytic chemical vapor deposition method directly on SiO2/Si substrates. Molecular recognition elements for DMMP were chosen from small molecules library that have similar structures with DMMP to impart high sensitivity and selectivity. Through electronic structure simulation, the material that may exhibit the highest charge transfer with DMMP was selected, and patterned on SWNT-FETs by e-beam lithography. The synthesized SWNTs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) operated in the tapping mode. Electronic transport properties of sensors were measured in field effect transistor geometry as well in ambient conditions. Properties of SWNTs sensors under various gas concentrations will be discussed in detail.
