A bent-shaped bipyridine ligand containing a dendritic aliphatic side chain has been synthesized as a ligand and complexed with Ag(I) through a self-assembling process. The resulting complexes were observed to self-assemble into a helical secondary structure depending on the counter anion size. In addition, these helical polymers showed the dynamic conformational change from the nonfluorescent compressed to fluorescent stretched states, triggered by temperature. In addition, the resulting complexes were observed to self-assemble into ordered structures that differ significantly depending on the coordination geometry of the metal center in the solid state. The polymer based on Pd(II) self-assembles into unfolded zigzag conformation that organizes into a layered structure. In contrast, the polymer based on Cu(II) adopts a double helical conformation that organizes into 2-dimensional lattice, even though the coordination geometry of Cu complex is an essentially similar square planar structure to that of Pd complex.
