Electrochemically assisted modification (ESM) of electrode surfaces with specific chemical end functionalities for the immobilization of biomolecules has been extensively studied during the last two decades because the modification can be completed within very short time and allows spatially selective functionalization of closely-spaced electrode surfaces by the application of potential bias. There have been two types of ESMs. One is direct electrodeposition of functional molecules. The other is electrochemical reaction of chemically modified electrodes prepared from, for example, self assembly on gold surfaces with electroactive molecules, through which the modified surfaces convert to their corresponding activated forms. Here we report spatially selective attachment of biomolecules onto electrode surfaces using not only each of the two ESMs, but also a combination of the two ESMs as a useful tool to fabricate microarray for biological assay.
