Assembly of materials into higher ordered structures can lead to distinct, collective physical properties which are not exhibited as they are randomly arranged. Block copolymers have been widely investigated because of their unique properties of spontaneously being assembled into various morphologies either in solution or in melt. This abundant morphology of block copolymers has found many applications in the fields of biotechnology, electronics, engineering etc. Herein, we report our effort on constructing optically active functional materials by self-assembly of block copolymers, and their characterizations. As an example, various photonic band gap (PBG) materials, periodic dielectric structures where the propagation of a certain frequency range of light is forbidden, have been spontaneously assembled from block copolymers, and their optical properties has been tuned by chemical and electric stimuli.
