In this work, the combined application of gas chromatography and thermal desorber (GC-TD) was investigated to evaluate the full quantification range for a number of reduced sulfur compounds (RSC: H2S, CH3SH, DMS, CS2 and DMDS). For this purpose, a series of TD-based calibration was conducted against RSC standard gases prepared to cover a wide concentration range (2 to 100 nmol mol-1) at a wide sample loading range (40 to 1,200 mL). The basic performance of the GC-TD system was then evaluated in terms of recovery rate of each compound. The reliability of TD-performance is found to be limited at the two extreme ends of calibration due to: (1) low loading volumes of low concentration samples: inefficiency in the control of sample loading and in cryofocusing of small RSC quantities and (2) high loading volumes of high concentration samples: frequent occurrences of off-scale values (e.g., maximum linearity of 35 to 50 ng) due to the breakthrough of cold trap unit. In addition, the uncertainties in TD-based quantification tend to grow systematically with decreases in standard concentrations and in sample loading volume, especially with light RSCs like H2S. The results confirm that the use of GC-TD decreases the instrumental detectability of GC by about an order of magnitude, although such reduction is compensated by extended linearity with the similar magnitude.
