Electron transfer between photo-excited semiconductor and metal is an important process in photocatalysis and solar energy conversion. While metals in contact with semiconductor nanoparticles have been employed to enhance the overall photocatalytic activity, the interfacial electron transfer processes are yet to be understood fully. We will present the quenching studies of photo-excited TiO2 nanoparticles by structurally and energetically well-defined alkanethiolate-coated monolayer-protected gold clusters (MPCs) with core diameters of 1-5 nm. The quenching efficiencies determined by the Stern-Volmer plots are remarkably size-dependent. The origin of the size-dependence can be understood by the size-controlled capacitance of MPCs. In addition, the photocatalytic applications of these TiO2-MPC assemblies will be presented.
